I hope this one doesn't get ganged up on by the flagging brigade. Of late, anything even remotely political, esp if it's critical of Trump or Musk get flagged immediately and swiftly moved off the front page.

Regardless of of your political affiliation, this kind of behaviour is the very antithesis of the hacker culture this forum was built around.

I’m all for discussing this stuff but this forum is “hacker” in name only and that definition of “hacker” might be closer to lifestyle hacker than blackhat hacker. There was also no enshrining of beliefs that guarantee good discussion will save a thread in hacker culture.

If anything this should be a sign that someone needs to start a political forum with Hacker News level rules and moderation.

HN has never had a strict rule on what was acceptable that I remember. Name or otherwise.

But it doesn't matter, even specific tech articles get flagged now.

Its so dismaying that there's seemingly no redress for this uncivil hostile information suppression campaign.

Its so unhackerly to have a couple losers endlessly suppressing the (dark as fuck) story of our time like this.

The "I don't want to see this on my feed" is such a rotten terrible lame excuse. Don't click in, then, snowflake! Your disinterest counting for infinity versus everyone else's interest is repugnantly anti-hacker to the core. The hacker spirit is curious, interested, and believes in sharing and finding out.

These people are the foe. There needs to be some limit against this manipulation by those who would force us to Know Nothing.

Replace the front page with https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=last24h or https://news.ycombinator.com/active, which both include flagged articles. HN is still quite useful for US news, despite all the people censoring with their flag veto when they disagree with upvotes.

The unprofessional and arbitrary nature of the administration I fear empowers lower levels of government officials to behave similarly and that leads to absurdity … and corruption.

I have heard two of my conservative-leaning family members describe the government as corrupt. My impression is that this was used as justification for voting for Trump. I.e. I don't know that convincing people who voted for Trump that he's corrupt will change things too much.

My current approach is to talk, seeking things we can agree on. Then identify specific items that we disagree on which are worthy of discussion.

It's such a strange thing to talk about with others.

A friend is a big Trump supporter. I don't even know what he thinks Trump is or means. He seems to have some opinions on economic policy, but they're vague.

He recently expressed to me some surprise at the arbitrary cuts and cruelty related to Trump's social policies.

I don't know how to address "You thought a rapist and felon who mocks the disabled and talks about how he could shoot someone and get away with it ... wasn't cruel?"

I guess people just don't pay attention to the more obvious social cues or just ... statements?

I think he has to be vague in the economic policy front considering the spending and monetary policies of the first term followed by the current tariff whiplash.

Nothing he's done so far is outside of campaign promises so if anyone's pleading ignorance they went well out of their way to avoid information.
