Man Detained by ICE for Autism Awareness Tattoo Sent to Prison

I am sure his other two tattoos are just as harmless, but why doesn't the article describe them? Telling me what one of the tattoos is but not the other two leaves me wondering if the article is trying to deceive me by omitting context. At the very least it is disrespectful to the reader for a journalist to only tell me the most sympathetic detail while presumably leaving out harmless but less emotive details, as though they think my tiny brain would be overloaded by that much detail.

The article is a based on another article. Mother Jones appears to have broken the story: https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2025/03/trump-el-salvad...

Unfortunately, the article isn't well written (in my opinion) and it seems details of the other tattoos are not provided, although I may have missed it.

The tattoo on Suárez’s neck is of a colibrí, a hummingbird. His wife said it is meant to symbolize “harmony and good energy.” She said his other tattoos, like a palm tree on his hand—an homage to Suárez’s late mother’s use of a Venezuelan expression about God being greater than a coconut tree—were similarly innocuous. Nevertheless, they may be why Suárez has been effectively disappeared by the US government into a Salvadoran mega-prison.
Ferret7446
Isn't that a question for the Salvadoran government? The US is responsible for deporting illegal immigrants, and it is up to El Salvador whether the persons are criminals that need to be imprisoned in El Salvador or left to return home like a regular Salvadoran citizen.
therealcamino
Suárez, a 33-year-old native of Caracas, Venezuela

is in the second sentence of the Mother Jones article. He is not a Salvadoran citizen, he's been sent to a third country by the US.

xboxnolifes
That was my first response as well, but my second response was that I don't support stop and frisk/question/detain with tattoos as the sole basis. No matter what the tattoo is.

So, while the autism awareness is made front and center to rouse opposition, it's not relevant to the issue the article actually adresses.

They know people largely just read headlines and they want clickbait and outrage, so why bother doing real journalism
TrackerFF
Wonder how long it will take until they start going after H1-B visa holders. They're already disappearing "undesirable" foreign students, so it can't be too long until they'll go after foreign workers.
650REDHAIR
Hasn’t that already happened with a transplant Doctor and professor on the east coast?
readthenotes1
If I recall correctly the transplant doctor was sent back because she had gone to the Hezbollah leaders funeral, and the state department interpreted that as work for the organization.
blindriver
It's very hard to avoid the accusation that you endorse terrorist beliefs if you attend the funeral of the head of Hezbollah. It's hard to say you didn't know the implications of that. As a visa holder, all you need is the accusation for CBP to deny you entry.
megous
What terrorist beliefs in particular?
lupusreal
American zionists, particularly in the Trump government, seem to think that anything other than complete loyalty to Israel is terrorism.
megous
And spread the fear of having other thoughts like this, I guess: https://www.ctvnews.ca/montreal/article/climate-of-fear-mont...
Hikikomori
Believing that Palestinians shouldn't be slowly exterminated probably.
dartos
They won’t.

Remember the bipartisan bill to end/reform the H1-B program and that died after Musk tweeted about it?

Tech giants make too much money off of H1-Bs

Ferret7446
I assume "undocumented American" is a disingenuous way of saying illegal immigrant, and the headline is a disingenuous way of saying that the man was deported for being here illegally and not for an "Autism Awareness Tattoo".
kuschkufan
i mean, where else would you deport all illegals to if not the el salvador terrorism confinement center?
IncreasePosts
"Alleges Family" seems like it should be in the headline.

The mother jones article which is the source for the latintimes article uses the term "reportedly". It also includes an actual statement from an ICE officer:

Robert Cerna, an acting field office director for ICE’s removal operations branch, said the agency “did not simply rely on social media posts, photographs of the alien displaying gang-related hand gestures, or tattoos alone.”
thatguymike
If this was actually happening, what would you expect to see different? The reason we have due process is so that we don’t have to rely on second-hand reports to monitor the justice system. Get rid of due process and this is what we have.
freitasm
So, what will be the follow-up? Will he be brought back home?
Gigachad
Probably the same thing that happened to all those people the US incorrectly labeled as terrorists and sent to Guantanamo bay. They spend a few years getting raped, drugged and tortured and then they either die or get paid to shut up.

And then the Americans will celebrate solving their made up problem.

lmaoguy
We should send all invaders to CECOT for a month.

Makes for a great warning

And then the government wants us to play by its rules. Sure /s
